Mission:  To provide an opportunity for student participation in competitive athletics in an environment that fosters academic and athletic success.  Men’s athletics offers participation for about 200 athletes in eight sports:  baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track.  Supporting the competitive athletic programs are the strength and conditioning department and the sports medicine department.  Scottsdale Community College competes as a member of the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Art Becker has been the Director of Athletics for 25 years and is responsible for the operation of the department.  He has been active as an officer in the ACCAC having served as President, Secretary and Treasurer (current).  Mr. Becker has been active in the National Junior College Athletic Association serving as Director for Region I and Vice-President for Men.  He is currently serving the NJCAA as its President; an office he will hold until 2011.

The Assistant Director of Athletics, Ed Yeager, is responsible for monitoring academic success, study halls, grade checks and initial eligibility screening.  In addition to the Director and Assistant Director, the Department is comprised of the head and assistant coaches of the eight sports.  The department is supported by the athletic secretary, equipment manager, and athletic trainers.

Programmatic success:   The athletic programs at Scottsdale Community College have had a great deal of success throughout the years.  In the last few years SCC men’s athletics has competed in NJCAA Region I tournaments as well as competing in NJCAA National Tournaments.  Men’s Tennis finished among the top 15 teams in the nation in 2005 and 2006, finished 3rd in the nation in 2007 and 13th in 2008.  Men’s Golf is traditionally ranked among the top five teams nationally, winning the NJCAA National Championship in 2007 and finishing runner up in 2008.    SCC Football hosted the Valley of the Sun Bowl Game in 2001 and 2004, finishing in the top ten nationally both years.  Basketball, Soccer, Cross Country and Track have appeared in Region meets and tournaments.  The SCC baseball team finished 3rd in the 2007 NJCAA National Baseball Tournament.

Scottsdale Community College has had Academic All American Teams (a team minimum of 3.0 gpa) in the sports of Baseball, Golf, Tennis, Cross Country and Basketball.  The soccer team was just named the NJCAA’s #1 Academic All American team in 2008 with a grade point average of 3.09 as a team.  A major goal of the athletic department is the transfer of student athletes.  During the period from 2004-2007 over 150 male athletes have transferred to four-year colleges with athletic scholarships.

Facilities:  The athletic facilities consist of the main gym, practice gym, tennis courts, soccer field, practice football field, main football field and track, a baseball practice field and the main baseball field.  All athletic facilities have been significantly upgraded over the past three years.
