Sophomore Night Basketball
Come celebrate the Chokes this evening as we host the last home game of the 2009-10 season.  Not only will it be an exciting match up verse Eastern Arizona but we prior to the start of the game recognition of our notorious sophomore class will take place. Heading into tonight, the Chokes are ranked 5th in the conference with 13 wins and 7 losses (3rd within the DII colleges). Worth noting the Chokes lead the conference in rebounds as a team and a number of our sophomores stand out in the conference as well.
 
Transfer Renetha Burton leads the team ranking 6th in the conference averaging 14 points a game with a total of 364 points; Burton also ranks 3rd in conference with 11.4 rebounds and 1.7 blocks a game. Fellow sophomore Charnay Mothershed reaches the charts in many categories as well. Mothershed leads the conference in steals with 120, averaging 4.4 per game and ranks high in assists averaging 3.7 per game. She is not far behind team mate (Burton) averaging 11.9 points per game, tallying up a total of 322 points; sister Charnise Mothershed also a sophomore ranks in the scoring category with an average of 10.2 points per game.
 
Congratulations Chokes! May you play to your full potential tonight as you gear up to take down the Gila Monsters of Eastern Arizona at 5:30pm. Hope to see you all there! 

Two Wins for the Week
Women’s Basketball acquired two more wins to add to their record this past week. The Chokes first defeated the Gauchos of Glendale CC (89-75).  It was an on-going battle with scores back and forth, fortunately our Chokes came out on top. A few days later the Chokes had no problem taking down the Gila Monsters on the road; score against Eastern 62-50. The wins make the Chokes 5-5 in conference, 11-7 overall.
 
Four of our Chokes continue to stand out and reach the top in the conference for individual stats: Charnay Mothershed steals, assists and scoring; Charnise Mothershed scoring and 3 pointers; Renetha Burton scoring, rebounding and blocks; Jazzmin Avriett rebounding and blocks.
 
Congrats to the team and those individuals who continue to soar high! Come support the team tomorrow evening, Wednesday January 20 @ 5:30pm in the North Gym.
 

 

Holding on at the Half

With a little over half of the basketball season underway, the Lady Chokes hold onto an overall winning record. Currently, the Chokes are 8-6 on the season (3-4 in conference play). Over the break, the Chokes have won 5 games with 2 losses!

During the annual Bill Culver Memorial Classic hosted by Scottsdale, the Chokes were 2-1; only a few points shy of gaining another victory. As a team, the Chokes have tallied a total of 1028 points (versus accumulation of 957 points from opponents)!

Steady performance assisting in team victories from: Charnay Mothershed leading the team with 64 scored points, 57 assists, 49 turnovers and 57 steals.  Renetha Burton trailing just behind with 63 scored points, 119 rebounds, 33 turnovers and 19 blocks.

 Bill Culver Memorial Classic Program and Results

The Women’s basketball team earned two wins in a row to bring their overall record to 5-5. On Thursday evening (12/17/09) the Chokes defeated the visiting Bengals of L.S.U Eunice in a close battle coming out on top 76-73. Last year Eunice was victorious in the face off and at multiple times the other night they were up against the Chokes.  With standout performances by key individuals Scottsdale was able to pull through in the end. Charnay Mothershed led the Chokes with 15 points, 6 assists and 3 steals; closely behind scoring 14 points, 16 rebounds and 5 turnovers was fellow team mate Jazzmin Avriett.  
On the following Saturday (12/19/09) the Chokes came out and annihilated the Panthers of Morton College; with a final score 71-26. Charnay Mothershed led the team in points again with 14, 4 assists and 7 steals. Both Stevie Yazzie and Renetha Burton scored 12 points; Yazzie tallied up 7 rebounds.
Come support the Chokes next week during our annual tournament, the Bill Culver Memorial Classic.  Teams will be visiting from Southern Idaho, Williston State, and Madison Area Tech. Tournament play with begin December 29 @ 1:30pm and conclude on December 31 @ 3:30pm. Scottsdale is scheduled to play the following days and times:
December 29 @ 3:30pm vs. Williston State College
December 30 @ 1:30pm vs. Madison Area Tech College
December 31 @ 1:30pm vs. Williston State College

High Scoring for the Chokes

The Chokes have been rather impressive achieving many ranks throughout the conference, particularly in offense. Currently, as a unit the team ranks second in the conference with an average of 75.7 points a game and shooting percentage .411.

Individuals scoring on the high side offensively: Renetha Burton is averaging 17.7 points/game, Charnise Mothershed is averaging 14.3 points/game, closely behind averaging 13.7 points/game is sister Charnay Mothershed. Charnise Mothershed also is ranked second in the conference with 3-point shooting percentage of 41.7%. Charnay Mothershed and Champayne Bellamy both rank within the top eight for assists, averaging 4 (Mothershed) and 3 (Bellamy) per game.

Not to take away from other elements of the game, as there have been some stand out athletes in the defensive categories. Renetha Burton is averaging 9.7 rebounds/game, Jazzmin Avriett is leading the conference in blocks with 3.3 average/game and the Mothersheds rank one and two in the conference with steals, Charnay  6/game and Charnise 4/game.

 Wow! What a collaborative effort among individuals to ensure success of the team. The Chokes current record in the conference 2-2.

mothershed_nise Charnay Mothershed National Player of the Week!

Congratulations to sophomore stud, Charnay Mothershed who received NJCAA DII Player of the week! She had an impressive week in helping Scottsdale to two victories over Region 1 foes. On Nov. 17 she posted a rare double-double of 17 points and 10 steals in a 77-67 victory over Chandler-Gilbert. She also had nine rebounds and two assists in the win. Just four evenings later (Nov. 21) Mothershed tallied 14 points with six assists, four rebounds and four steals in a 81-60 victory over Cochise.

 Solid Start, Player of the Week

Women’s basketball is off to a solid start as they begin their season undefeated in conference with two wins (3-1 overall record). The two conference wins come from defeating South Mountain and Chandler- Gilbert. The Chokes add another “W” to their overall record by tromping over Cochise College (81-60).
Sophomore, Charnay Mothershed received ACCAC DII Player of the Week. She tallied up 31 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 10 steals combining stats from team wins over Cochise College and Chandler-Gilbert CC.  Mothershed also ranks in the conference for scoring, assists and steals.
Many of our other lady Chokes stand out thus far in the conference for individuals statsin various categories. Among those student athletes are: Renetha Burton for scoring and rebounding, Charnise Mothershed for scoring, steals and 3 point shooting percentage, Charmayne Bellamy for assists and Jazzmin Avriett for blocks.
