Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week! Sept. 8 2009 By: Katie Logan
Freshman setter, Taryn Salum was nominated Player of the Week for her performance during last week conference and tournament play. Quite the fresh start for Salum who was averaging over 8 assists per game along with 2.1 digs per game; in addition to averaging 1 kill per game finishing with a .536 hitting percentage.
Salum led the Chokes to a 2-2 record in the Roughrider Tournament this past weekend. Along with Salum several Chokes graze the top stats as the season heads underway; freshman outside hitter Leah Nelson averages 2.5 kills/game, Dixie transfer Rayla Doty has accumulated 21 blocks so far averaging 1.31/game, closely following sophomore middle  Erin Flake is averaging .86 blocks/game and libero Ashley Totten has tallied up 61 digs in five games.
Great start Chokes! To catch these studettes in action head over to the North Gym tomorrow night, Wednesday September 9 @ 7pm as the Chokes take on the Eastern AZ Gila Monsters ( Admission is free for all employees).

Volleyball Studettes

Did you know?...our volleyball team has received five Player of the Week awards this season. That is more than any other team in the ACCAC Conference! Most recent nominee, Rayla Doty received Player of the Week for last week’s performance. Doty averaged 1.8 kills a game and 2.8 blocks for the week with zero errors! Doty hit .474 assisting the Chokes in victories over AZ Western and Mesa.

Past recipients; Sophomore Erin Flake received not only ACCAC Player of the Week but National Player of the Week recognition two weeks ago. Freshman, Taryn Salum acquired dual Player of the Week nominations as the only setter in the conference to achieve this award.

Congratulations to our stand-out studettes. Not to forget, Scottsdale will be hosting the ACCAC Region Tournament Thursday Nov 5- Saturday Nov 7.

Make sure to check out a game and support our Chokes as we begin the journey to Nationals! A Region Tournament Schedule will be posted on the web.

National Player of the Week 13.jpg

Erin Flake, a Mountain View, Arizona native averaged 2.86 kills, 1.4 blocks and 1 dig per set last week to earn NJCAA DII Player of the Week honors.  The Scottsdale sophomore recorded 13 kills against South Mountain, who received votes in the national poll, as well as four blocks, five digs and two aces.  Later in the week she had seven kills, six blocks and two digs against Chandler-Gilbert.

Volleyball Total Domination

This evening Scottsdale suits up to take on Chandler-Gilbert CC.  The Chokes head into this evening only giving up one set to opponents in the last three games. This Wednesday evening (10/14) Scottsdale defeated rival South Mountain 3-1.

The previous week the Chokes annihilated both Yavapai College (10/7) and Phoenix College (10/9) in straight sets. Sophomore middle, Erin Flake received Player of the Week for her contributions to the pair of wins for the Chokes. Against the Roughriders Flake had a .481 hitting percent with 8 kills; two evenings later Flake upped her game hitting .700 against the Bears.

Come watch Flake and her team mates as they prepare to take down the Coyotes this evening, Friday October 16 @ 7pm in the North Gym.

Volleyball Grazing the Top of the Charts!

Volleyball wins yet another game last evening, defeating Yavapai College 3-1. Scottsdale continues to climb the conference with many of our Chokes who reach the top in individual conference stats.  Sophomores Rayla Doty and Erin Flake make quite the blocking combo as they are ranked 1st and 2nd in the conference; Doty averaging 1.43 blocks per game, Flake closely behind with 1.28. Freshman starlet, Taryn Salum reaches the charts in blocking (.85/game), assists (8.10/game), and hitting percentage (.312%). Libero Ashley Totten ranks fourth in digs with 247 (4.33/game).

Chokes Volleyball Stomps all over Aztecs  By: Katie Logan

The Chokes stomped all over Pima College Aztecs last evening, defeating them in straight sets.  It was quite an exciting evening and truly a team effort. The Chokes record in conference currently 5-2; overall record 9-7.

Head Coach Regina Mannix was recently elected NJCAA Volleyball Coaches Association President.  As President she will represent all 304 volleyball programs for the three divisions (DI, DII, DIII) at the NJCAA National Convention as well as the AVCA National Convention. Regina will serve as President of the NJCAA Volleyball Coaches Association for two years.  We are proud to have one of our own SCC staff members selected for such a prestigious and honorable position.

Congratulations Artichoke Volleyball and Head Coach Regina Mannix. The next home game is Wednesday October 7 @ 7pm in the North Gym.

Freshman setter, Taryn Salum receives ACCAC Player of the Week for the second time this season! Salum averaged over 10 assists a game and committed only one error as she helped the Chokes pick up two on the road wins this past week.

The Chokes came to South Mountain ready to pounce on the Cougars (09/16/09), crushing them 3 games to 1 (scores 25-19, 28-26, 21-25, 25-16). Two evenings later, the Chokes annihilated Mesa Thunderbirds not giving up a single game (scores 25-13, 25-20, 25-21)!

The pair of wins put the Chokes in good spirits as they focus and prepare to take on tough opponent Glendale College. Currently, Glendale and Scottsdale are tied leading the ACCAC DII with 3 wins each. This upcoming game will be an exciting battle that you will not want to miss! Catch the Chokes defeat the Gauchos tomorrow evening, Wednesday September 23 @ 7pm in the North Gym.
