Need some help?  Here are a few clues:

  • This snake mainly inhabits forested mountains and plateaus, but also occurs down into the desert to elevations as low as 1,500 feet.
  • One of the most attractive snakes in the United States, this species is recognizable by its black tail and large head.

It's a Black-tailed Rattlesnake (Crotalus molossus)!
This individual is pictured next to a Teddy-bear or Jumping Cholla (Opuntia bigelovii).
