Lab Rules

USE OF THE OPEN COMPUTER LAB:

The SCC Open Computer Lab provides assistance in computer and software usage. The lab staff also strive to project a feeling of professionalism in a quiet library-like atmosphere where you may work without undue disturbance. Please set pagers and cell phones to silent mode and take phone conversations outside.

You must be a currently registered student at SCC or in a NAU Bachelors or Masters Degree Program to use the Open Computer Lab. The computer lab may only be used for SCC "class related work". Any other use is not permitted such as: business, personal, ASU, etc. You may be required to provide proof of registration and picture identification to use any of the equipment or software available in the lab.

TEXTBOOK CHECKOUT:

The computer lab has textbooks for many BPC and CIS courses.  Students may use these only in the computer lab.  You must have one of the following forms of ID to check out textbooks:

  1. Drivers License
  2. Current Student Picture ID
  3. Current Fitness Center Picture ID
  4. Registration Fees PAID Slip and any Picture ID

PRIORITY OF COMPUTER USE:

  • Disabled students have PRIORITY on the Handicapped Station.
  • Please limit your time on the scanner stations to 20 minutes.

AVAILABLE ASSISTANCE:

The assistance will be of a technical nature and not that of an interpreter of what an individual instructor requires. The lab assistants will not do homework assignments for you. Each assistant will not be an expert in every language or application that is taught. However, the lab will strive to provide help with the majority of applications.  Contact your instructor for issues that cannot be resolved by the lab staff.  Lab assistants are not teachers, tutors, or experts in every aspect of software usage or programming languages. The lab staff expects you to have read and studied the assignment before coming to the lab and to have attempted the assignment before asking for help. You may not look at a sample of the finished assignment and expect the lab assistant to show you how to do it step by step. If you have missed class it is up to you to seek the help of your instructor.

5-MINUTE TIME LIMIT FOR ASSISTANCE:

The lab assistants have a time limit of 5 minutes per student. It is important for the assistants to be available to all students who need their help. If you need more help than the lab is able to provide, seek additional help from your instructor and/or ask your instructor if his/her Department offers free individual tutoring.  See “Other SCC Computer and Tutoring Resources".

FOOD/DRINKS:

No liquids, food, or use of tobacco products (including chewing tobacco) is permitted in the computer lab area. These items may be placed on the table provided by the door.

Note: Water bottles or other beverages that have a secure screwed-on lid may be placed on the floor by the station you are working.

CHILDREN:

NO CHILDREN PLEASE! Insurance policies prohibit children in the computer lab area.

CLEAN-UP:

Please help keep the computer lab and equipment neat and clean by picking up after yourself. There are paper recycle bins for computer paper and trash cans for all other trash.
