Individual Counseling
Individual Counseling
Counseling Services offers free individual counseling to SCC students. Services include: personal counseling, educational planning, career counseling, career and personal testing, and referral. Information discussed in meetings with counselors is confidential. However, limited disclosure may be necessary if, in the professional judgment of the counselor, such disclosure is needed to prevent any individual from physical harm.
Personal/Social Counseling

Professional counselors can help students identify, understand, and develop skills to resolve their personal concerns. Counseling is an educational process which enables a student to learn more about himself or herself.
Students often seek counseling to: increase self-confidence, assertiveness, and self-esteem; control test anxiety, or cope more effectively with stress; deal with problems involving alcohol or drug use; develop more satisfying relationships and better communication skills; deal with issues of grief, trauma, or loss; overcome procrastination; or other self-defeating habits and behaviors.
The College recognizes the relationship between personal development, emotional wellness, and success in academic pursuits. SCC's counseling program is designed to support and assist students who have personal issues which impede their academic success by offering crisis intervention, brief solution-oriented counseling, and referrals to other agencies, services, or other professionals.

Educational Planning
Most college students are interested in looking at the "big picture" in relation to their educational/career direction. Counselors work with students to explore options, examine specific degree requirements, clarify college credits from other colleges and universities, and develop individual educational plans.
However, initial steps for most students are: to 1) Take ASSET placement tests, 2) attend PAS session and then, seek advisement from the Advisement Center. Advisors will help with program selection, provide a catalog and schedule of classes, and interpret placement test scores. At that point, you should be able to register. If you are still confused or unclear about your next steps, see a counselor.
Often times, these kinds of discussions lead into exploring career directions.
Career Counseling
Career decisions can be difficult for many students. In fact, around 70% of students start college unsure about their major. College provides an excellent opportunity for students to explore a number of different fields and majors. For many students this experience greatly expands their awareness of potential careers. While this can be overwhelming, it is often better than having a narrow view of possible career options. Counseling can help students to manage and understand this information.
Counseling Services provides individual career counseling to help students make career decisions. This may involve confirming a chosen career path. It may involve exploring one's own interests/abilities and looking for potential career options. It may involve discussing potential career changes. It may involve helping to manage the stress that often comes with career decisions.
