Overview of the historical, psychological, social, and cultural aspects of play, leisure, and recreation and their role in contemporary society. Nature of play and leisure behavior in human development within different cultures and the contribution play, recreation, and leisure make to the quality of life for individuals in today's society. Prerequisites: None.
Subsequent classes are held each Thursday at 3:30pm with two weekend trips; 10/3-4 and 11/14-15. Learn and practice basic camping/backpacking skills including equipment selection, wilderness first aid, and “leave no trace” principles. Basic level of fitness required. Enrollment limit – 18.
REC210 #55387 Tuesday, 6:00-8:50pm (starts 9/1). Systematic study of Delivery of Leisure Services in public, commercial, non-profit and independent sectors; particular emphasis placed on the urban setting. Prerequisites: None.
REC230 #58970 Wednesday, 6:00-8:50pm (starts 9/3). Foundations for designing, planning, delivering and managing recreational and leisure events. Emphasis on application of recreation programming concepts and practices in a variety of settings and situations for a diversity of participants. Prerequisites: None.

REC250 #55423 Thursday, 6:30-9:20pm (starts 9/3). An examination of roles and methods of leadership in leisure services settings. Overview of theories and models of leadership, group dynamics, participant motivation, communication, and face-to-face leadership. Exploration of leadership contexts, including coaching and officiating sports, leading community groups and volunteers, working with persons in various life stages and with varying abilities, and leading different recreation activity areas. Prerequisites: None.

First orientation class is Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009 at 8pm gym lobby. This is a one-time orientation class. Date of the trip is Sept. 26-27. Participants will learn canyon hydrology, travel, navigation, safety systems, Leave No Trace principles, anchor construction, escape route detection, climbing skills, rappelling, down-climbing techniques, spotting, wading and swimming techniques, equipment selection, rescue situations, group management, ascending techniques, flood and weather identification, and much more. Students will spend one night (camping) in the field. Travel/activity cost $35. All canyoneering equipment, some food, permits, and transportation are provided. Ability to swim and basic level of fitness required. Travel/activity cost is due at registration, no travel/activity cost refunds after 9/14. Enrollment limit – 18. First orientation class is Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009 at 8:30pm gym lobby. This is a one-time orientation class. Date of the trip is Nov. 7-8. Participants will learn cave ecology, navigation, safety systems, Leave No Trace principles, anchor construction, lighting systems, equipment selection, rescue situations, group management, ascending techniques and much more. Students will spend one night (camping) in the field. Travel/activity cost $35. Basic level of fitness required. The emphasis on this course is on horizontal caves as opposed to vertical caves. All caving equipment, some food, permits, and transportation are provided. Travel/activity cost is due at registration, no travel/activity cost refunds after 10/19. Enrollment limit – 18. First orientation class is Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009 at 8:30pm gym lobby. This is a one-time orientation class. Date of the trip is Oct. 17-18. This class will include instruction on safety, belaying, and climbing techniques. The course will be conducted outside - on real rock - and students will have ample time to practice their skills. Students will spend one night (camping) in the field. Travel/activity cost $35. All climbing equipment, some food, permits, and transportation are provided. Basic level of fitness required. First class orientation is Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009 at 8pm, gym lobby. This is a one-time orientation class. Trip leaves Friday, Oct. 16, 2009 at 7am returns Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009 at 10pm. Covers basic camping, hiking and rafting skills and an introduction to the geological history of the Grand Canyon. Basic level of swimming and fitness required. This 5 day whitewater rafting adventure includes round-trip transportation from/to SCC, shuttles, camping and rafting equipment, food, and river guides. Travel/activity cost of $575. First class-10/7, 3pm, gym lobby. Class meets for 4 weeks (Oct. 12 – Nov. 4, 2009 Monday & Wednesday, 3-5pm)
at the Rio Salado Operations Center near Tempe Town Lake. Designed for first time rowers. Includes basics of rowing a four and eight person shell, safety, boat handling, and proper rowing technique. First class is Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009 from 3:00-5:40pm. All classes will meet at AZ on the Rocks (Loop 101 & Bell Rd.) each Tuesday from 3:00-5:40pm. Focus is on developing your endurance and power with a strategic training regime custom-tailored for each student. This course is for beginners and intermediate climbers. Travel to Williams Thursday evening then hike down to Havasupai Campground on Friday, layover Saturday and hike out Sunday. Travel/activity cost of $145. includes roundtrip transportation, first night (Thursday) motel in Williams, campground fees and permits. Basic level of fitness required. First orientation class is Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009 at 8pm in the gym lobby. This is a one-time orientation class. Date of the trip is Oct. 10-11. The Sedona Mountain Bike Trip is two days of exciting single-track trails, eye-popping Red Rock views and delicious meals by the campfire. Students will learn basic mountain bike repair, nutrition and fitness tips, trail etiquette and mountain bike handling skills. This course is hands-on, held in the outdoors with overnight camping. Mountain bike/helmet is not included, may be rented separately. Transportation, permits, camping fees and some food is included. Travel/activity cost $35 payable at the cashier’s office at the time of registration. Basic level of fitness required.
